Description

Weaving its way along New Hampshire's only seaside shores, the Coastal Byway is charmed with an expansive view of the rolling tides. Historic landmarks dot the countryside, the most famous of which is Wentworth-By-The-Sea Hotel where the delegates who signed the Russo-Japanese Peace Treaty in 1905 stayed.

Beginning in Portsmouth, Route 1A follows the coastline for 15 miles until it meets Route 286, just past Seabrook Beach. The optional Route 1B loop, which re-connects to Route 1A in the town of Rye, can be added to the trip.

Passing through historic Portsmouth, the wandering road ganders at the old-time architecture, then heads toward the ever-popular Hampton Beach that invites a fun-loving crew for playtime on its sandy shores.
